There are over 30 country specific value sets for the EQ-5D-3L and more than 20 country specific value sets for the EQ-5D-5L. While we aim to produce value sets for many more countries, it is not rare that users need a value set that is not yet available. If you need to obtain health state utility values for the EQ-5D-3L, it is recommended to use the United Kingdom value set from Dolan et al. (2002). If you need to obtain health state utility values for the EQ-5D-5L, the recommendation is to use the United States EQ-5D-5L value set from Pickard et al. (2019) as the United Kingdom valuation study is currently ongoing.

If both TTO and VAS tariffs are available for your country, it would be recommended to use TTO tariffs. This is because, contrary to VAS, TTO is a choice-based preference elicitation method. This method is the preferred elicitation procedure according to the EQ-VT protocol.

If you need to obtain health state utility values for the EQ-5D-5L, the recommendation is to use the United States EQ-5D-5L value set from Pickard et al. (2019) as the United Kingdom valuation study is currently ongoing.  If you need to obtain health state utility values for the EQ-5D-3L, it is recommended to use the United Kingdom value set from Dolan et al. Yes. If a 5L value set is available for your country, you can estimate 3L utility values using the reverse cross-walk. Tools for this will be made available within the first quarter of 2022. As an alternative, you might choose to use the United Kingdom EQ-5D-3L value set of Dolan et al. (2002).

Yes. If a 3L value set is available for your country, you can estimate 5L utility values using the cross-walk. This can be done with one of the tools available on the website. As an alternative, you might choose to use the United States EQ-5D-5L value set of Pickard et al. (2019).

The cross-walk was intended as an interim solution to obtain EQ-5D-5L values while no value set for this instrument was available, but a value set for the EQ-5D-3L existed. Whilst the cross-walk is appropriate to answer methodological scientific questions and to obtain health state utility values in absence of  a country specific EQ-5D-5L value set, the recommendation is to use the standard EQ-5D-5L value set if it exists.

The reverse cross-walk can be used to obtain EQ-5D-3L health state utility values using the EQ-5D-5L country specific value set. If both an EQ-5D-3L value set and the reverse cross-walk are available, no direct recommendation can be made. If the EQ-5D-3L value set was produced using the recent EQ-VT valuation protocol, it might be reasonable to use this value set. If the EQ-5D-3L value set is relatively old, the user should assess whether preference might have changed in the country of interest and what is the likely impact of using a value set conducted using another valuation protocol. These considerations might lead to prefer the reverse cross-walk over the standard EQ-5D-3L value set, or vice versa.

There are currently no EQ-5D-Y country specific value sets. The first EQ-5D-Y valuation are expected to be published in the last quoter of 2020, beginning of 2021. Further guidance will be provided once these become available.
